Welcome to Luna and Daddy's Blog where we share all about our favorite books! We are excited to get this started and to begin making posts at least once a week or once every two weeks. We hope you like the reviews and leave us comments about them. We really like to read positive comments, but Daddy says it's good when people leave us comments telling us how we can do a better job, too.
Elephant and Piggie come in a huge series. There are currently 25 books in all! The books are about an elephant and a pig who are silly best friends. Some of the books in the series have parts that are a little bit sad, but they all are mostly very funny. Dad says the books are aimed at early readers, but they are good for everyone. They are especially good for children who are learning to read with expression.
Mo Willems is one of our family's favorite authors/illustrators. In addition to the Elephant and Piggie books, he is the creator of the Pigeon series, Knufflebunny, and MANY other fantastic titles.
Sometimes our reviews will be mostly writing and sometimes we will make videos. For our first review, we want to share a book trailer Daddy and I made a couple of years ago about Elephant and Piggie: WE ARE IN A BOOK!
I give the series 5 moons because the author put a lot of hard work in to the books. He made them really funny and interesting to read. Even if you can't read, the illustrations show you what the characters are thinking and feeling. We have read this book over and over, and we still love it!
Luna this is great. I am so happy that you will be sharing books with others this way. I can't wait to share with my friends. A friend of mine who teaches in Saudi Arabia just posted the other day that she cried when she realized she had read all the Elephant and Piggie books that there were. She was wishing for more. Your post and hers makes me really want to check those books out. Keep reading and keep sharing with others.
ReplyDeleteHi Martha,
DeleteThanks for your comment. I want to read all the Elephant and Piggie books, too. I can't wait for others to read the blog as well. Do you have a recommendation for another book I should read? I am really into Fantasy books right now.
From, Luna
Hi, Luna! Thanks for sharing about Mo Willems book! He's one of my favorite authors for kids too --- and he is funny!
ReplyDeleteKeep reading and reviewing! You can help lots of other kids find great books too!
Dear Tracy,
DeleteThanks for writing the comment! I enjoyed making the blog. I agree that Mo Willems is very funny. Will you tell other people about my blog? Do you have any recommendations for books I should read? I am reading Dragon Slayers Academy Book 1 and I just read the Imaginary Veterinary Books 1-5. I LOVED them.
From, Luna
This is awesome Luna! I look at the Elephant & Piggie every time I shelve them at the library. A great book for practicing reading with expression is The Book With No Pictures. Have you read it yet? It definitely should be read aloud to others! http://thebookwithnopictures.com
ReplyDeleteHi Mark!
DeleteThanks for writing. We want to see you soon! Yes, I have read The Book With No Pictures. It's so funny! It makes adults say silly things because the adults have to read the silly words. One of the teachers read it in front of the whole school at an assembly. Everyone laughed so hard! What else should I read? Fantasy books are my favorites right now.
Thanks.
Luna
I'm at work now. I'll make a trip down to the Children's Library and see what I can find!
DeleteThese look fun:
DeleteDeadtime Stories - Cascone
The Chronicles of Avatntia series - Blade
Infinity Ring series - various
We want to see you soon, too! Linda is in Croatia but we'll give a call when she gets back next weekend.
Thanks for the recommendations, Mark!

Luna, what a great idea to have your own (and Daddy's) blog about reading! I like how you chose pink for your words! I do not have a single Elephant and Piggie book in my class library (or do I? You probably know!). Do you think I should get some for second graders?
ReplyDeleteMrs. Fullner
Dear Mrs. Fullner,
DeleteThank you for commenting on my blog! You do have Elephant and Piggie books in your library. I have read at least one of them. Yes, you should get some more for second graders because they help people who are learning to read and they make you enthusiastic about reading another book in the series.
Love,
Luna
P.S. I will miss you.
Luna, I really enjoyed reading your post. We LOVE MO Willems! I'll be sure to share this with Liza Jane so she can check in on your posts.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the great work.
Alisa
Hi Alisa,
DeleteThanks for commenting. That would be great if Liza would read it. When can she come over and play?
Love,
Luna
Thank you for sharing your favorite books. I am reading a series by Michael Phillips about two friends (one black and one white) after the slaves are freed. I am going to look for Elephant and Piggie in my library. I also enjoyed the video. You are a good reader and could start your own program to read to younger children.
ReplyDeleteDear Anonymous,
DeleteThank you for commenting on my blog and for telling me about what you're reading. It sounds interesting. My dad says a good book I should read that is set during slavery is called Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis.
By the way, who are you?
Thanks!
Luna
Luna, I am so excited about your blog because Kate loves to read and we always need good recommendations. We'll have to check out Elephant and Piggie because if you like, I bet Kate will too. Can't wait to see what else you recommend. We are readin Harry Potter right now, but we were just asking your mom if you've ever read Ivy and Bean?
ReplyDeleteDear Dara,
DeleteThanks for your comment! I have not read Ivy and Bean but I've heard of it. My dad says I'd like it. I haven't read Harry Potter either but I would like to start. Right now, I am reading Treasure Island and Guardians of Ga'Hoole with my dad. Guardians is really scary. If you like Elephant and Piggie, you will probably like KnuffleBunny and the Pigeon books by Mo Willems, too. We will have more blog posts before summer ends.

Hi Luna,
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've ever read a blog were a kid reviews books before. I think it's a great idea! Could you tell us in your next reviews what ages the books are best for? I hope you keep doing your blog for a long time.
Miss Colleen
Hi Miss Colleen!
DeleteThanks! I think it's a great idea, too! Thank you for your idea about the ages. I will try to do that.

Hi Luna! I'm loving this blog so far! Nice work!! Which character is your favorite? Piggie or elephant?? And why?? Can't wait to hear your response! Have read My Father's Dragon series? The first book in the trilogy is my favorite! Keep reading outside in the sunshine or the shade (the shade is my favorite!)
ReplyDeleteHi Nina,
DeleteThanks for the comment! Elephant is my favorite because he is always worrying about things and it's very funny. I have read My Father's Dragon. I like reading in the shade as well.
Love,
Luna
Hi Luna (and Brian - its Heather from Toronto)
ReplyDeleteI love that you and your dad are taking the internet by storm to talk about reading. What a great summer project. My favourite summer reading memory is going to the local library and taking part in the annual summer reading program. One year they created a HUGE solar system in the library and we had to read our way through all the planets and some constellations.
I've not heard of the Elephant and Piggie books but with 25 different adventures, there must be lots of stories. If you had to write a new adventure for the characters, what would it be?
Hi Heather!
DeleteMy adventure would be called The Great Hike. Elephant and Piggie would go on a hike and go swimming in a mountain lake when an alligator chases them!
Hugs & Kisses,
Luna
P.S. Can you come over soon?
Luna!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your book review! I haven't read an Elephant and Piggie book before, but I do love the Knuffle Bunny stories.
I would like to recommend a book to you: Fortunately, the Milk, by Neil Gaiman. It's a little scary because different monsters put our heroes in peril, so consider that when you are thinking about reading it. I love adventure stories with monsters and time travel, and I think your mom and dad would like reading this book with you. Let me know what you think!
Happy reading!
Molly

DeleteHi Molly!
DeleteThank you for the recommendation. I enjoy monster books sometimes depending on how scary they are. I think I will like this book. I like adventure stories as well. I will tell you how I like the book. You should start reading the whole series of Elephant and Piggie because they are so funny.
Love,
Luna
Hi, Luna!
ReplyDeleteYour review of the book was awesome. Spencer and I will get some Elephant and Piggie books out of the library next week when we are there. We love the Knuffle Bunny books here at our house and actually own them. We can't wait to read more Mo Willem stories. Thank you so much for the recommendation! We also can't wait to see more posts on your new blog. Keep up the great work!
Love, from Cousins Staci and Spencer
Hi Staci and Spencer!
DeleteIt's nice to "meet" you! Thank you for your comment. You should do that because there are many Elephant and Piggie books. They're awesome! We are going to make a lot more book blogs before summer ends.
Love,
Luna
Great job, Luna! I hope that the grown ups who respond will help their kids to add in comments. The best recommendations for young readers (especially books in a series) usually come from other young readers! I am currently in France and when I went in a Libraire (bookstore) there were no Eléfant et Cochon books. Seems like they would be easy to translate and most of the humor comes from the great illustrations. For fantasy, I would recommend the Children of Green Knowe books (children in a manor house in England find that there are other children there too from a time long ago) or the Nanny Piggins books (pigs make excellent nannies if you like having chocolate for breakfast). You might need some help with them, but then you could get your parents hooked on them, too!
ReplyDeleteHi Scout,
DeleteThank you for the comment. I agree that adults should ask their kids to respond. It would be fun to hear from kids. The bookstores in France should have them. Kids from France don't know what they are missing out on. They are so fun. I think that I should read the Children of Green Knowe books. I think I should have chocolate for breakfast every single day, so Nanny Piggins would make an excellent nanny.
Have fun in France.
Love,
Luna
Luna, this is so cool!! I remember seeing your book trailer for "We Are In A Book" a couple years ago, and it convinced me to share Mo Willems with more generations of first graders. That is the power of sharing and writing about books! :) I hope you have a fantastic summer full of reading and writing, and j can't wait to see what you review next!
ReplyDeleteHi Miss Hie!
DeleteThank you for the comment. I miss you. How has your summer been? We will have lots more posts about books before summer ends. I hope you can come back again.

Luna
P.S. Where are you teaching now?
